TSA lock (the acronym for Transportation Security Administration, a US government organisation that works to protect the US transportation system) is a security system designed to ensure a positive and trouble-free experience for travellers who entrust their luggage to US airport staff.
In fact, following the attack on the Twin Towers in 2001, in order to guarantee the highest level of security in the country, US airport authorities have the legal power/right to open any suspicious or random baggage, without requesting permission from its owner.
A TSA lock, or the presence of a TSA padlock, allows the customs officer to open the suitcase without damaging it, using a specific key.

The TSA padlock allows travellers to embark their bags in the hold and collect them without the inconvenience of breakage and/or damage due to such spot checks.
In concrete terms, the TSA is a padlock, or lock, installed in the shape of the suitcase, designed with a secondary opening mechanism which can only be opened by means of a specific universal key (not commercially available) held by customs officers.
The main advantages are that no suitcases will be damaged and that your personal belongings are more secure and protected from theft.
